Victory for the Feet

Dwyane Tyrone Wade Jr.

Aka Flash. Aka D-Wade. Aka Our Latest Legwear Consultant.

Turns out, the Miami Heat guard is as passionate about hosiery as he is about winning NBA championships. That’s why he’s teamed up with online sock boutique Stance for the newly released Dwyane Wade Collection, a line of shin-length knitwear designed by the WoW himself (the man is also passionate about his nicknames, apparently).

He’s got 13 splashy pairs to choose from, with the bulk of the designs bearing a very strong South Florida inspiration. Some of the selections are pretty overt in their love for Wade’s adopted home: the Flamingo boasts the eponymous bird surveying a sunset over the words “Miami Beach,” while the Ocean Drive displays palm trees and postcards from the city’s famous coastal thoroughfare.

Other patterns are a bit more obscure, to say the least. We were somewhat baffled by the Cubana, a fanciful number that’s a mess of checkers, cheetah spots, zebra stripes and some surreal symmetrical images. Our guess: D-Wade had a bad run-in with some Havana rum once, and this was the result.

We at least give the basketball star props for bringing attention to an oft-ignored part of our wardrobe. With athletes now giving sartorial endorsements left and right, it’s nice to see a major player devoting time to more eclectic clothing options. So far, his efforts seem to be working: the Dwyane Wade Collection has been out for less than a month and already the socks are out of stock.

But don’t worry—there’ll be more available faster than Wade can come up with a new nickname.
